What did you think of the poem? I would like you to take a few minutes and respond to it, or write your feelings, comments and questions about the reading. I'd be interested to hear what you have to say about it. What do you think this proverb means? I am just going to give you about a few minutes to write about this. After you finish, go back to this post, and read the rest so you know what we will do today in class.
After your 10minute writing, we will (hopefully) discuss the proverb.
I will also give you and your partner a proverb to think about, another one from Robert Frost (I like Frost's work).
Next there is a handout I want you to work on. Your task will be to define these words as best you and your partner can WITHOUT a dictionary. On those words you do not know, I want you to guess, based on the word itself, what it looks like, what it 'sounds like.' You will leave no blank spaces on this document, since the goal of this assignment is to get you to guess. Have fun with this, don't worry about the answers right or wrong, think of it as a guessing game and hopefully you will find it more enjoyable.
Thats it, guys, the rest of the class will be spent on secret stuff!

"Good fences make good neighbors."
I think I agree with the idea.
Neighbors are not always friends for us, and to keep good term with them, it's necessary to keep certain distance with them. I guess this poet understand the meaning directly because his neighbor is not good for him, so he doesn't agree the proverb.
I disagree with this proverve because if we have morale,we don't need fences between neigbors.And sometimes fences interfer with each other when we need to neigbors help.I think we need to interaction with neigbors to live. Go mizuno
i agree with it. the fence allow us to communicate with the neighbor when we like to.this can make good relation.we can live more comfortable without knowing each private too much because neighbor is just a neighbor,not a family.we have to live in the same area whether the neighbor is good person or not.

I agree the proverb somehow. It is important to keep our own privacy against the person who we don't familiar with so much. On the other hand, If we want to know and make friend with the person living next to us, the fence won't be needed. So I think it's case by case. There is a proverb which similar to it in Japanese; "Shitasiki naka ni mo reigi ari.". At first, I heard the proverb, it reminded me that. It means that if you and your friends are very good friends, you should keep the person's privacy as well as your's.

I agree with this poem.But sometimes,I need to know neighbor's charcter.If I don't know about neighbor so much,it is also bring the problem.
I don't want to behave like neighbor in this poem but good fences are necessity.
I read the poem a hour ago, and I thought its a little bit tough staff. I could understand 60persent of overall meaning but Im not sure...According to the poem and your hint, this is like a story of a guy who doesn't feels that mending wall in the spring is troublesome. I thought "oh such a daily story can be a poem! interesting." anyway, the overall story is the same as title,mending wall. I think wall can be old in a year and becomes to easy to be bloken. So it needs to be repaired. what Im not sure is the ending,

I didnt notice that the wall was made of stone......anyway, Im agree with this proverve. on the other hand, the content of poem, I dont know because I was terrible sleepy while you are explaining the ending half of poem.....any way, I like the idea of this proverve because I think too close to people sometimes feels me annoying. people wants thier own privacy. even though the reration ship with the person and another is close, I think it should be taken a distance. Too much close to the people will blake the rerationship.

At first, I couldn't undestand the story,but I agree with that poem. Because, people shpuld have distance to some extent even if they are neighbors.Each of them have privacy which doesn't want to be touched. Some people may have good relationship without such as fence or borderline between them. But, they don't have to caused prblems by making fences before.
I have a yard in my house, and it is separeted from neighbors by block fene. It is because we can defend other's interfer.
I'm agree to his neighbors.
I think his neighbors doesn't want to show his property or life-style.
He may wanted to make a good distance bewteen writer. or he may needed his rest place. In my case, I think I need fences between my neighbors. Doesn't matter how it's a real fences or not. Just I want to make a my place.

I agree to this proverb. Because I think we need space each other,and need to keep to myself privacy. But sometimes it also become to interfere with relationship between neighbor.

I don't agree with this poem. Because I think they should contact with each other and talk. Although good fences need, if one of them is at a loss, they should help each other. I think it is important for our lives to know about neighbors.
I could not understand tis poem well. I don't agree with this idea. I think that fences make people separate. That is to say fences can become a barrier against others. So it is better not to build fences. In this poem, they do not need to build fences.
If I and my neighbor have cows, I have to agree with proverb. Actually, my house have big garden, and there are many trees and plants. Therefore, I need fence because the trees might lean to the neighbor.
I don't agree with this proverb except the above case because the neighbor in this poem is too much thinking that making fance is good thing. I think if we have good relationship and we can communicate with neighbor, we don't need fence between us.
I would say "Good communication make a good distance" because to communicate with people is to tell what I think and to receive what people think. So if we can communicate, we can make a good relationship.
I agree to this proverb "Good fences make good neighbors" We should keep our own privacy. But I don't know why poet dosene't agree with him...

If you think that way, and you do not assept your neighbers, you would be isolated. I think good relationships is made by some conversation or communication. So, I guess that it is not a good idea to avoid your neighbers. However,it is depend on the people who live in next you though...

I saw this poem at the first time and I thought it was very difficult one. So it's hard to understand for me. This poem describes about wall and the phrase"Good fences make good neighbors." is key to understand it.
I agree with this proverb because I need my privasy and if there is no fense, I will especialy care about my neighbor. To keep a good relationship with neighbors, fenses need in any situation like poet. I thought the poet let us to know something important rules or morals in another words or examples. This one was very tough to understand for me and some Japanese proverb are also,too. But we should think about these words why the poet wrote and this backgrounds...

I agree this proverb, because if I don't have fences, I have careful about my stuff. I don't want to be the man, but it's important to divide own stuff.

I disagree. I don't think good fences make good neighbors. Neighbors should be friendly, but making fence isn't good way to be friend.
This poem is hard for me to understand, I think for everyone. As I read your comment what the first sentence of the poem is meant. Then I got some idea from it but not enough to guess what it all about.
In this poem, there are apple farmer and pine farmer are mending a wall which is made of stone. The walls fall down every year. If you do not repair the wall, the wall will fall apart. The apple farmer questions himself that whether keeping privacy is necessary or not. On the other hands, his neighbor thinks that keep to yourself away from people is good.
I personally think that the relationship between your friends or people, you need to keep a little distance. Because you shouldnt step into people's heart.
"Good fences make good neighbors." I don't agree with this proverb. In the poem, I thought the neighbor should not keep the fences. This is because the neighbor don't need to keep fences. Trees don't move. In my opinion, it's not very good to keep a distance when the occasion is inappropriate. However, it's good to keep distance when the occation is appropriate, I think

I agree with this. Because I don't think getting along with nighbors is not always maiking good neighbors. Even if neighbors seldom talk with each other, it is possible that someone says "They are good neighbors."

I agree with this proverb.Because,We have privacy each other,so we need to secure own privacy.To make good relationsip, we should keep distance.
i would like an 80 foot fence between me and my neighbours
