Consider the following quote.

First describe what it means - what is the message, can you make it more clear? Then explain the reasons you beleive it to be true (or not). This should take about 15-20minutes.
Following this, we will (hoepfully) as a class, share ideas about our suggestion to Ms. Jones' questions. Below, you will find her letter and questions, just to remind you of what we are talking about. I am hoping for detailed responses here, not just the basic (don't wear your shoes in the house, we use chopsticks at dinner, I think these are pretty common knowledge, but what other standard etiquette rules might she want to know? Discuss it, be specific then let's share our thoughts.
Dear Ms./Mr. Manners,
I am an American college student visiting Japan for the first time. I will be living with a host family there, and need to know how to act polite. Can you help me? I wrote some questions below. Thank you!

I don't think this quote is right. It's unfair. We all have to have manners. Rich or poor, pretty or ugly, these aren't connection at all. There are manners to live in comfort each other.
I can almost understand the quote. I think manners are one of useful tools to communicate with others smoothly. It's could be said that the wisdom of the ancients. On the other hand, the genuine pretty and smart are able to do that without conscious. That's to say, they don't need to learn manners. That's the reason I believe the quote is true.
I think that is not true because I think we have to have manners regardless of our appearance. But in sociaty we aften care about appearance than behavior.
I think this means ironic like this.
Manners is for the ordinary people.

I think this quote is not true. What does "The pretty" makes pretty? "the pretty" is the person who is pretty, of coures. But, who thinks the pretty who is moralless is pretty? So the pretty in this quote is not pretty for real. "the pretty" is "the ugly". So I think this quote is ironic.
I disagree to this sentence. because all the pretty don't get away with anything. One of them may get away with anything, and ordinary people sometimes don't know manner, so I think it is depends on people.
This quote might be the right.But I think manners need to everyone.
If we don't care manners,we can't make good relationships with other people. It is very important to save mannars because of living in the society.
It's not fair because I think both people need manners in society. Actually, the pretty may have some advances according to others for their beauty, but it's true that everyone has moral and they all should know how do they behave neatly. There's no differences among both of them.
We can also not devide who is plain and who is not.
I think this idea is really unfair but I can understand what he said. Even if we insist that we don't think so, there is the idea in our mind actually.....
However the person who is really cool or cute but behaves badly isn't regard as the true beauty!!

I think this is wrong and unfair. Before I saw a woman she was so beautiful but her manners were so unbeauty. For example, she throw the cigarette away on the street. Do you think is this a good manner? When I saw that situation, I was disappointed at her. How can she throw away even there is a rubbish bin for cigarette next to her. And, I think manners are also represented us to how we are character therefore it is necessary for our life.
I don't agree with him because the pretty does not last long that means the beauty can get away with anyting for only a short period of time. Some people tend to judge people by how they look at the first sight but after that they intentionally check one's personality to find out whether he/she is worth to be my friend or not. Overall, manners are common sense. Everyone need to know the rules of etiquette to live in a society. If you were living in a island alone, you dont need to have any rules to live. Just remember where you live, you are surrounded with people, you must to care about others.
I don't agree this quote.Many pretty people has good manners.I think we have stereo type for the pretty.If they behave badly,we will be shocked.Because we think they are perfect in appearance or manner.It is stereo type to them.
We also have stereo type to not beautiful people.We might guess they are not good on appearance and manner by stereo type for them.When they behave badly,we don't care because we might guess they are ugly in appearance and manners by stereo type to them.
I agree that we need to keep manner. and we have to more be careful about manner than the pretty...? This means the pretty knows what manner is? I don't know. I think everyone try to keep manner.
I think to know manners is important things in our daily life.If not keep the manner, othe person in surrounding will feel unconfortable.

manners are more important for the normal people.people being against manners sometimes ruin the other's daily life. the pretty can makes others feel good even by their looks, but normal people can't. so they should make much of manners, i think.
I agree with this phrase because sometimes I feel this point in the train. The person who cares about their own beauty has no manner ex,in the train. The looks is good but the behavior is pretty too bad.
I think the etiquette is necessary for everyone. One day in the train, the man kicked my foot suddenly, but I don't know why it was. I was very sad after that...
So in Japan, Mr Jones should have some manner, if so he will spend his life happilly.
In Japan basic house rules, you should bring some daily goods for host family and you should say "Hajimemashite" and your name.
This message means that the manner is more necessary for ordinay people than pretty people. I agree with this idea "manners are especially the need of the plain." but I think that the pretty should have the manner,too. Because I think the manner is important for people to build good relationship between people.Even if they are cute, they can not make relationship.
I think beautiful people tend to be overlooked with manners. However, I don't agree with "The pretty can get away with anything". If a beautiful girl don't care about manners, people might be disillusioned by her behabior. As time goes by, the beautiful girl looks like a person of vulgar tastes.All of the people have to follow manners, I think.
I agree. Because many beautiful women don't have manners. Sometimes i see that they make up her face in the train. Also, they're chatting aloud there. I think they want to stand out. Because they regard themselves as beautiful.

Sometimes, I think the quote is true. But in ganeraly, everyone have to follow the monner.
When we first meet people, we look them not only feture and looks but behavior. And we communicate with people, so if the beautiful person no manner and rude, we don't want to commmunicate with them. So, manners are important for everyone, I think.
I think this quote is interestingand I can understand, but I don't want to agree.I also think pretty people don't care manners and they think they are permitted. Sometimes I can see that people make up in the train. I don't think it's good.
