11/24 Turkey Day!

Back home in the States, they are celebrating my favorite holiday today. Here, we celebrated the "5th Annual Thanksgiving in Japan" yesterday. Most often, Thanksgiving is considered a 'family holiday' where everyone rushes home for the long four-day weekend (Thursday & Friday vacation), but as people nowadays are more likely to live further from home (sometimes even across the entire country) is becoming more common for friends to celebrate Turkey Day together. We had a wonderful get-together with about 20 people. Sadly, we didn't get many good pictures so here are some from our Thanksgiving celebration in Kanazawa, 2003. Different place, but same basic priciple: we ask everyone to bring a "traditional Thanksgiving dish," and something to drink. We (usually a friend or myself) cook and carve the bird. Then we all sit around and eat. And eat. And eat some more. It's gooooooood!

So I'm curious about your favorite holidays; how, when, where, and with whom you celebrate your special day(s). I'd love you to share some of your thoughts about your favorite days of the year, why, and what you do at these times. I'd like you to take about 10 minutes and discuss your favorite holidays with the people sitting near you, sharing ideas is a good way to get ourselves ready to write. Then, I will give you about 15minutes to write a paragraph about your favorite holiday. If you finish early, feel free to read up about Thanksgiving at this link.

Once we finish the writing, we will choose to either work on Unit8 or discuss holidays, (Thanksgiving - if you want me to lecture, your favorites if you are willing to share...) If we work on U8, "Communication Styles," we will be continuing to discuss the differences between expressive and reserved with a couple additional activities before we look at the book, page 31.

Ok so that's the plan. Let's get to it!

I remember I had a Setsubun party on this February with my friends in her house. In Japan,it is popular to eat Sushi roll and throw beans to the person who is costumed like a dermon. In family it is known the father will costume the derman....
Every year the news tells us the best direction for eat Sushi roll and we have to eat them as watching for this direction.
I think the dermon is a example of bad thing which is in every home. So when we throw beans, we say "the dermon is out! The happiness is inside!!" We wish we could spend the year without the bad thing.
I think it is no rule, we can spend this day with everyone we want. It is normal with family or friends.

The holiday I like best is The New Year. I usually visit my grand parents' house. Japanese often get together to their parent's home, so I can see and talk with other relatives who I can't see usual there. In addition, I also visit to some temples and shrines with my family or friends. I also enjoy a New year's sales. Lots of goods are discounted for celebrating The New Year. I and my friends really enjoy the sales. We can get some new clothes and other things with our New Year's gift from our elder relatives!!

I like New Year the best. Because I don't know why, but I'm exhilarated the day. I eat Osechi, watch TV and take it easy without doing anything the day with my family. Also, I pay a visit to a shrine on New Year's Day with my friends.
I also like Culture Day. Because the day is also a wedding anniversary of my parents. So, we always have a dinner with my family on the day.

One of my favorite holidays is the New Year's Day. Every year, on that day, I eat osechi,go to uncle's house with my family to meet my relatives, and go to shrine with them. I like this holiday because I can eat special dishes like kazunoko, gomame, kobumaki, and zo-ni. In addition, on the day, I can see my relatives whom I can't often see on other days, so it is the good opportunity to be able to talk with them and I could get some money from them!

My favorite holidays are Golden Week and Easter.
Golden Week is very long holidays in spring and a succession of holidays from April 29th to May 5th, therefore I can go back to my hometown and see my friends. This season, the weather is so nice and it is good to have a barbecue or hiking with family or friends to bring with a lunch box.
Easter is aloso my favorite holiday. There is no Japan but I experienced in Australia. We went to camp and hided chocolate eggs.

My favorite holiday is New Year's day. Because I can stay at home with my family. And we eat New year's foods. Also i can relax. We go to grandparents house. Then i meet uncle, aunt and cusion. We seldom meet them. So i'm happy to meet them. When I was child, i got a lot of money from them. But now, i couldn't get it.
In New Year's day, i feel comfortable. Because many shops close and many people don't have job. We can relax very much.

I like valentine day.Women give a chocolate to men with a love in Japan. It means a woman offers to a man for getting together.
The reason why i like this holiday is just fun.Sometimes,Girl's friends give me a chocolate even if it is just for showing friendship. It makes me happy.
But it is shame to buy a chocolate by myself in the valentine for me.

I like Respect for the aged day.On the day, people celebrate the elder , especially in their family. The idea is originally for over 70 years old people, but now kids and children celebrate their grand parents even if they are young. In my case, I go to my grand parents house with all family member , and have dinner with them. Then I give presents for them. I often draw their likeness on papers when Iwas a child, but now I give some accessories or letters. I like the day because I have good time with my grand parents. Not only grand pa but also my father and mother look having fun, so I' m happy then.

at the comming of age day, the people who are celebrated have to dress up and get together in the celemony place of the city with old friends. usually most girls wear long-sleeved kimono, boys wear suit. there also come old teachers. after the celemony, the people will have a party.
im just looking forward to it and can't help seeing my old friends!!

I went to Hirakata Park with my speaking partner yesterday(special holiday). There were lots of people there, because they wanted to see "Kiku-ningyou" (a doll which is made by Japanese flowers). "Kiku-ningyou" had been one of the symbol of Hirakata Park for a long time(about 90 years). We lined for 1 and a half hours for it. Finally, we could see!! It was very pretty. We also rode the roller coaster and a Ferris wheel. The view from the Ferris wheel was beautiful, so we took a lot of pictures. My speaking partner will go back home soon. I enjoyed a lot with playing and talking with her. It will become a good memory for us.

My favorite holidays are New Year's Day, Christmas Day! Why? Well, New Year's Day is the best because my mother never stops working except that holiday. Only New Year's Day is the time all of our family get together and do something special for a few days. As an adult, you likely less spend time with family so this holiday keeps family tight once a year.I am not sure what other people think though. Second favorite holiday is Christmas Day. During this season I receive Christmas cards from my friends. It is same as nengajyo-u. It is special holiday that people think and care about other people, and send own message.
